Program Description

Generative artificial intelligence has quickly become a regular news topic and part of our lives in ways we may not even realize. But what exactly is it, and what are the consequences for society? UW-Madison Librarians Dave Bloom and Heather Shimon will introduce the background and functionality behind generative AI, demonstrate some of its everyday uses, discuss the benefits and drawbacks of this technology, and answer questions.

About the presenters: Dave Bloom and Heather Shimon are Science & Engineering Librarians at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Libraries. They have been tracking developments in generative AI since the popularization of ChatGPT in early 2023 and are chiefly interested in the impact of publicly available generative AI tools on how we search for and engage with information.
