Program Description

Read The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood and discuss. Books can be picked up at the library starting on August 12th.

The American Library Association (ALA) compiles data on book challenges from reports filed with its Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) by library professionals in the field and from news stories published throughout the United States. In 2023, OIF documented the highest number of challenges in their 20+ year history.

We have the freedom to read. Let's use it. Other Banned Books Week events in Dane County.

ABOUT THE BOOK

The Handmaid's Tale is a futuristic dystopian novel by Canadian author Margaret Atwood published in 1985 to critical acclaim. It is set in a near-future New England in a patriarchal, totalitarian theonomic state known as the Republic of Gilead.

In 2017, The Handmaid's Tale reached the small screen when Hulu released a the TV show of the same name with Atwood listed as consulting producer. In November 2018, Atwood announced the sequel, titled The Testaments, which was published in September 2019. The novel is set fifteen years after Offred's final scene, with the testaments of three female narrators from Gilead.
